Composition in II Genres: One-Sided Dialogue

For this assignment I referenced to the work of Shirley Jackson in her novel We Have Always Lived in the Castle for her use of horror. This is a one-sided dialogue from between the narrator, Merricat, and her cat. She unveils her thoughts the night she executes the murder of her family.

To The Moon

“They sent me away again. This proves they deserve it.”

“After tonight they will not be able to send me away.”

“I’m sure of it Jonas. I know, you see, because I made sure of it.”

“It will all happen tonight. Their horrid taste will be the death of them.”

“Yes, it does involve dinner.”

“Don’t worry Constance will be fine.”

“Everything will be fine after this.”

“Constance would never send me away.”

“She is my loyal fairy and she’ll fly us to the moon.”

“You’re right, her wings will grow tired flying all that way.”

“Yes, we’ll take a flying horse instead.”

“Constance would like it on the moon.”

“Constance wouldn’t want to be around people who send me away. It hurts me so it hurts her.”

“That’s why it works so well Jonas. It’ll just be us on the moon.”

“Do you want to hear the sweet part Jonas?”

“It’s in the sugar.”
